The watch is from the 1960s and in great condition. This dial variant was only made for a very short time period, as the cost of making the applied indexes and numerals were very high and not in line with the idea of an affordable, robust everyday watch, which these watches were supposed to be. There are some particles on the inner side of the crystal. This model is the direct inspiration for the Glashütte Sixties reissues from the last couple of years. It looks fantastic on the wrist and has way better dimensions than the reissue with is 39mm!
The re-issue uses the late 60’s printed dial for the numerals, which still looks great, but there is something about actual physical indices on a dial made out of gold!

The GUB Glashütte Spezimatic is an iconic symbol of German watchmaking excellence, emerging during the 1960s—a period marked by significant technological and aesthetic advancements in the watch industry. Originating from Glashütte, a small town that has been a nexus of horological innovation for over a century, the Spezimatic represents a blend of traditional craftsmanship and industrial innovation, encapsulating the spirit of an era that was all about progress and modernisation.
Technological Innovation
The Spezimatic was introduced by VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), a company that played a pivotal role in the revival of East German watchmaking post-World War II. This model was among the first to utilize automatic movements on a large scale within the region. The calibers, particularly the 75 series, were a breakthrough, featuring a rotor that wound the watch with the movement of the wearer’s wrist—a significant upgrade from manual winding mechanisms.
Cultural Impact
During its heyday, the Spezimatic was more than just a timekeeper; it was a symbol of the GDR’s (German Democratic Republic) prowess in precision engineering and aesthetic finesse. Owning a Spezimatic was a statement of keeping up with global trends despite the Iron Curtain’s restrictions, providing a sense of connection to the broader world of fashion and technology.
Collectibility and Legacy
Today, the Spezimatic series holds a special place in the hearts of vintage watch collectors due to its historical significance and the quality of its craftsmanship. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Glashütte’s watchmaking tradition, standing alongside more widely recognized Western brands. Collectors prize the Spezimatic for its robustness, design, and the story it tells of a time when East German watchmakers carved out a reputation for excellence against many odds.
The Spezimatic by GUB Glashütte is more than just a watch—it is a piece of history, encapsulating a moment in time where design and function met the aspirations of an era. Its continued appreciation underscores the enduring allure of vintage watches and the timeless nature of well-crafted timepieces.

I have some of the original advertising materials for these watches in old catalogues which is neat, plus a scan of the original cost! Basically about a months salary from what I can work out adjusted inflation wise.
